We Have A Vision

  • Receiving a cancer diagnosis is devastating emotionally. Treatment costs, in addition to other related expenses, can be a huge burden for both patients and their loved ones. Mission Pink fundraisers makes it quick and easier than ever to help cancer patients.

The Mission Pink campaign to Conquer Cancer has been established to do one "BIG" thing: take down cancer. To do that, we need people just like you to join together and help.

Virtually everyone in the world, in some way and at some point, will be touched by cancer. Our work together gives a renewed sense of possibility to millions of survivors and their loved ones by supporting initiatives that encompass every moment that cancer touches people’s lives, from prevention and diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.

What cancer does to the body

Cancer is a disease that essentially makes your cells turn against you – normal cells glitch and begin to replicate uncontrollably and invade other tissues, forming tumors. A cancerous tumor (called a malignant tumor) will spread from one isolated tissue to nearby tissues and other parts of the body.

These new masses of tissue interfere with the body’s normal functioning and, if they spread enough, can cause the body to completely shut down. Because of this, cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the US, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths.

But if caught early enough, many cancers are treatable. Some of the most common treatments for cancer include chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which fight against the disease by killing the abnormal cells.

1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer

Allison's Story

Most four (4) year olds are learning how to hop on one foot, do a somersault, ride a tricycle, sing a song while growing up.  I was doing those things.  But I was also living with a father with cancer.  He had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer, a type of cancer with a very low survival rate.  Though I didn’t understand what illness my father had, I did understand that he was very sick.  He endured several surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy over a 2-year period.  The treatments made him as sick as the cancer had.

Even as a young child, I recognized that he was weak, ill, frail.  No longer could he carry me on his shoulders when we went to the park.  No longer could he enjoy his days with me and my little brother. The only thing he could still do was sit on the sofa or lay in bed.  Though, we made as much fun of that as we could, snuggling under blankets and watching movies together.

My father was so brave, never complaining.  His cancer went into remission for a brief time, and everyone thought he was going to get better.  But the cancer came back with a vengeance.  The cancer continued to ravage his body, until it was in his bones. He was so frail that he was a walking skeleton. I had to put  a pillow over my ears to close out the sound of my father howling with pain.  I felt so helpless.

My father succumbed to cancer when I was 6.  When my mother tearfully told me that my father had died, I felt rage and anger that something had taken my daddy from me.  I have always felt a burning need to do something to avenge the death of my father.  For now, Mission Pink is serving as that avenue.

For as long as I can remember, when people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always "to help people with cancer". This is a very unusual thing for a six (6) year old to respond with. This has been a truly been a LIFE LONG dream of mine.

No little girl deseves to grow up without her father. Milestones that are never the same through out your life; such as your college graduation, the day your dad is supposed to walk you down the aisle, the excitement of having your own children. I think about my dad everyday. Its a pain that can never be erased. You just learn how to cope with the missing piece of your heart.

My goal for MIssion Pink is to help other people from having to experience these painful experiences. With the power of prayer and the passion I have to help cancer patients, I can only hope to  make a difference to those who have a chance still by hostintg Mission Pink events.

The cost of cancer

Cancer treatment takes a toll on the body, both physically and emotionally, but can also significantly impact the patient’s wallet. Many don’t realize that the list of expenses for a cancer patient doesn’t only cover specific treatments, but everything from doctor visits and lab tests to hospital stays and home care, which can add up to tens of thousands of dollars.

A 2010 study by the National Cancer Institute estimated that the amount of money Americans spend on cancer treatment each year would increase 27 percent between 2010 and 2020, to reach a staggering $158 billion per year.

Having medical insurance doesn’t eliminate all out-of-pocket expenses. A 2011 Duke University medical study surveying 216 cancer patients found that average out-of-pocket costs for treatment exceeded $700 a month, despite the fact all but one of the participants had health insurance.

For someone who is regularly fighting a civil war with their body, these costs can be crippling, and can result in patients not following recommended treatment procedures.

In ONE year Americans will spend 158 billion dollars in cancer treatments.

In need of a support system

It can be hard for someone battling cancer to deal with the physical, emotional and financial hardships brought on by their illness. So it helps to have a strong support system from friends and family backing them up.

But often friends and family may not know how they can help when a loved one is dealing with cancer.

Being involved with Mission Pink for a loved one is an excellent way to show your support.

By combining the power of our events and with social media sharing and interaction, MIssion Pink  can help lighten the financial burden of cancer treatment while easing patients’ minds and lifting their spirits through the loving words of family and friends.

Who we're helping NOW!

Currently Begley Marketing has Chosen a beautiful young mother of two, Christina; to host Mission Pink fundraising events for. We are hoping to raise enough money for her to be able to undergo treatments. This is her third time battling cancer and undergoing treatments. Please feel free to read her story and follow us on her journey, as we do what we can to help her.

Christina's Story

“There are some things in life you have to share. You have to have someone to lean on and they will help get you through.”

Our Wonder Woman

Christina is an amazing mother, friend, family member and works as a case manager for people who are going through extreme hardships such as terminal illnesses and life altering situations. She volunteers at Moffitt Cancer Center, cooking for those who cannot prepare their own meals. She is a beacon of hope and positivity for all those around her especially her two children, one of which has been diagnosed with a hereditary chronic kidney disease. She is always one to lend a helping hand to those in need; meanwhile, she is no stranger to these hardships herself.

Her battle began in 2006 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Following a partial hysterectomy she made a full recovery. In 2007, she discovered a metastatic tumor in her left breast which resulted in a lumpectomy. Unfortunately, in 2011 the breast cancer returned and two weeks later she underwent a SSM mastectomy. After the mastectomy she was declared cancer free!

Tumors, Chemotherapy & Treatment

While preparing for a fitness competition in August 2015, Christina noticed her hand was becoming very swollen and painful and she was having trouble gripping things. She originally thought it might be due to her intense workouts. Following a doctor’s visit soon after, she discovered it was actually an aggressive soft tissue sarcoma forming in the joints in her hand. At this point, it was recommended that she undergo chemo, radiation, multiple medications, MOHS surgery & post-surgical rehabilitation. She has been undergoing chemo treatments for about 6 weeks. Due to her financial situation she is currently unable to continue the recommended amount of treatments or proceed with the surgery to remove the tumors.

Expenses

Copays for chemo alone amount to upwards of $11,200.00 per month. In addition to the chemo treatments there are also medications, doctor’s visits, routine tests and additional medical expenses. Christina is also a single mother who has recently had to move in with her mother in order to keep up with her everyday expenses such as child care, insurance, food, transportation, gas & lost wages.

Please Donate

Currently our goal is to raise enough funds for Christina to undergo her recommended surgery to remove the tumors and the subsequent rehabilitation so that she will be able to use her right hand again. Her surgery is planned to take place at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL. We will be posting updates as her treatment plan progresses. We appreciate everyone’s support, generosity, and love during this difficult time. Thank you!
